Built to last years - not seasons

Custom Solar Generators for Your Energy Needs | Big Girl Solar

About

Big Girl Solar was created because solar power should be simple, affordable, and built to last for years—not just a season or two. I grew up on the East Coast, where hurricanes and extended power outages were normal occurrences—they were part of life. I remember how unsettling it felt when the lights went out, communication stopped, and you were left waiting for the sun to rise. Those experiences shaped how I think about power, preparedness, and peace of mind.

Keeping this real, I've listed reasons to build your own and reasons to buy one already built.

Is buying ever the better choice? Sometimes.

Store-bought units come tested and certified, with a warranty and built-in protections. If you want plug-and-go with no learning, buy one. If you want power you understand, can fix, and can grow, build one.

Remember, only you can decide which is best for you and your needs.

Reasons to build

  • Repairable

When a part fails, you swap that part. A Jackery usually means shipping the whole unit back or tossing it.

  • Expandable

With the SB50 and bus bar design, you add a second battery or more panels. Most store-bought units cap what you can add.

  • More capacity per dollar

You get more for your money as you scale - larger DIY builds often cost less than a name-brand unit of the same capacity. Smaller builds usually cost about the same, but you get a system you can repair and expand.

  • Standard parts

You use common connectors and fuses, not a brand’s proprietary ports and cables.

  • You know how it works

This is my favorite, you can troubleshoot it in the field, and you know every wire and every fuse.

  • Custom fit

You choose the ports, such as a Starlink Mini jack, a CPAP plug, or USB-C.

  • Real LiFePO4 batteries

Many cheaper stores units use other chemistries. Building lets you pick the 3,000+ cycle kind

Reasons buying can win (worth knowing)

  • Store-bought units are tested and certified (UL or similar). A homemade one isn’t, which matters a lot if you sell it.

  • Wrong fuse or wire size is a real fire risk. A Jackery has protections already built in.

  • Buying is plug-and-go, with a warranty and support.

  • A build takes your time and tools.

  • Selling a homemade battery box can create liability and insurance questions, and you’d want that checked before you sell.

I also understand the quieter, more personal side of why power matters. There’s real comfort in having light at a dark campsite, being able to charge your phone, power a camera, or keep a radio running when you’re far from home. Whether it’s charging a cell phone, satellite communicator, GMRS or HAM radio, lighting your space, or getting through an unexpected outage at home, reliable power brings peace of mind.

Big Girl Solar is built on a simple idea: I want you to succeed with your system. If you understand your power, trust your equipment, and feel prepared—wherever you are—then I’ve done my job.
